Job Description: Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS)
The Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) is a vital member of our veterinary medicine team, responsible for providing specialized veterinary nursing care and support. This role requires a high level of expertise and proficiency in veterinary nursing techniques, procedures, and advanced medical knowledge. The VTS will work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other staff members to ensure the highest standard of patient care and client satisfaction.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide specialized veterinary nursing care: Perform advanced procedures, treatments, and diagnostics under the guidance of veterinarians. Monitor and assess patient conditions, administer medications, perform laboratory tests, and assist in surgical procedures.
2. Assist in patient management: Collaborate with veterinarians to develop and implement treatment plans. Monitor and record patient vitals, administer fluids, and provide post-operative care. Ensure accurate record-keeping and maintain patient medical records.
3. Support client communication: Educate and update clients on patients' conditions, treatment plans, and home care instructions. Address client questions and concerns with professionalism and empathy. Maintain a compassionate and supportive approach towards clients and their pets.
4. Conduct specialized procedures: Perform advanced techniques such as radiography, ultrasonography, dental prophylaxis, anesthesia administration, and laboratory testing. Ensure adherence to safety protocols and maintain a sterile and organized work environment.
5. Collaborate with the veterinary medicine team: Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other support staff to ensure efficient and effective patient care. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior veterinary technicians and students when required.
Qualifications:
1. Education: Completion of an accredited veterinary nursing program or equivalent is required. Possession of Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification in a recognized specialty area is mandatory.
2. Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician specialist or in a similar role is required. Experience in a specialty veterinary practice or referral hospital is preferred.
3. Advanced knowledge: In-depth understanding of veterinary nursing techniques, medical terminology, surgical procedures, pharmacology, and laboratory practices. Proficiency in anesthesia administration, radiography, ultrasonography, and dental prophylaxis is essential.
4. Certification: Must hold a valid veterinary technician license or certification as required by the state. Possession of additional certifications in specialty areas is highly desirable.
5. Attention to detail: Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks, maintaining records, and administering medications. Ability to follow established protocols and guidelines precisely.
6. Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with clients, veterinarians, and team members. Ability to convey complex medical information in a clear, concise, and compassionate manner.
7. Compassion and empathy: Exhibits a genuine passion for animal welfare and a compassionate approach towards patients and their owners. Maintains a calm and empathetic demeanor in stressful situations.
